Suicide - the act of a human being intentionally causing his or her own death.
"Inside was a stash of Ambien - pirated one pill at a time from her mother's prescription for insomnia, so she'd never notice. It had taken Josie nearly six months to inconspicuously gather only fifteen pills, but she figured if she washed them down with a fifth of vodka, it would do the trick. It wasn't like she had a strategy, really, to kill herself next Tuesday, or when the snow melted, or anything concrete like that. It was more like a backup plan."

A backup plan.
Over 30,000 citizens of merely the United States feel as though they need a "backup plan". On average, approximately 80 people per day take fate into their own hands and successfully end their life. For me, it is a painful realization that a human being could take the God given miracle of life and completely terminate it like it was nothing of importance.
Although it is difficult for someone not dealing with suicidal thoughts and emotions to understand, there are several causing factors and warning signs to be considered. Many who deal with suicidal issues are triggered by mental illnesses, family history, or far less than perfect lifestyles. Depression is one mental illness that is commonly involved with suicide. Although most people try to ignore depression and continue their lives as normal as possible, doctors highly recommend medications used to drive away the negative feelings that could lead to suicide.
"She had pictured suicide as a final statement, a fuck you to the people who hadn't understood how hard it was for her to be the Jocie they wanted her to be."
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
Many suicide victims feel as though they have no way out; that their life is such a horrible wreck that a better life is impossible to obtain.
"She'd somehow thought that if she killed herself, she'd be able to watch everyone else's reaction; that she'd get the last laugh. Until yesterday, she hadn't really understood. Dead was dead. When you died, you did not get to come back and see what you were missing. You didn't get to apologize. You didn't get a second chance."
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
In the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, 17 year old Josie Cormier had been contimplating suicidal thoughts until the day a school shooting at her own school takes place. She had not understood all the aspects involved in suicide, just like many other people in the world dealing with the same thoughts. Once you choose to risk everything and give up your life, nothing else matters. You cannot come back and tell your mother you love her one last time, or even say goodbye to your friends. Telling all of your grieving love ones that cared about you most that you are sorry for causing them so much pain and sorrow is not an option.
Suicidal thoughts could be affecting anyone at anytime. The feeling that show may not always convey what is on the inside. Help the one's you charish most to always feel hopeful and continually remind them that they are adored. <3
